Anne Harris named new editor of Sunday Independent

The paper’s former Deputy Editor succeeds her late husband Aengus Fanning at the helm of Ireland’s biggest-selling newspaper.

THE SUNDAY INDEPENDENT has named Anne Harris as its new editor.

Harris, previously the paper’s Deputy Editor, succeeds her late husband Aengus Fanning, who passed away last month.

Harris joined the paper as its Features Editor in 1985 and had served as its deputy editor for almost two decades.

Independent Newspapers Ireland chief executive Joe Webb described Harris as the “most innovative, talented and dedicated media professional in Ireland”.

“I know that if Aengus could have chosen his successor, that she would have been the only name on his list.”

The most recent circulation figures for the paper, for the first half of last year, showed its national circulation at 255,806 – the highest of any publication in the country.

The paper says its circulation translates to a regular readership of 971,000.

Any chance of this new editor dropping the charade whereby the SINDO makes up poll numbers and prints them under the name of a makebelieve polling company?

There are so many of the Harris/Fanning family working in the Sunday Independent that they could write off Christmas Dinner as a business lunch. What a joke of a paper. Love the circulation figures, how many of those are given away free.

What are the odds that in a state with a population of over four million people the best person for the job is the wife of the man who held the job previously. I don’t think so, it’s just another cosy golden circle with jobs for the boys and girls…….

  Ex wife of Eoghan Harris, one of the writers and widow of Aengus Fanning late editor. Step-Mother to Dion and Evan Fanning, Aengus’s sons, they write for the paper. Mother with Eoghan Harris to Constance Harris, who rights for a certain Sunday newspaper….
  
  Not to be confused with John Caden, Independent Journalist and prominent ex -RTE persona, who is father of Sarah Caden, wife of Brendan o’Connor who writes for the Sindo.

I hope the Sindo isnt going to complain about cronyism and nepotism anytime soon. Why give a job to Willie O’Dea, Celia Larkin and Eoghan Harris – all FF hardcore. Harris was appointed to the senate by his mate Bertie. Then he wrote everyday cheerleading him. Paudie O’Shea another buddy. No wonder the paper is morally bankrupt.

  It stated in the Times today that Investec (a South African Bank who own Start Mortgages) own a big chunk of the Independent and INM.
  
  Genius!!
  When Start Mortgages throw ye all out of your houses and repo them (because they stupidly gave you all expensive, dodgy, mortgages) they can stick them in the Indo’s property supplement to sell them all off cheap.
