THE FRENCH PRESIDENT and German Chancellor Angela Merkel held “constructive and fruitful” talks on the crisis in Greece and the eurozone, Francois Hollande’s office said today.

They exchanged “views on the situation in Greece, the preparations for a G20 summit and the next European Council meeting on June 28 and 29,” a statement said. The talks come on the eve of the Greek elections, deemed crucial for the future of the eurozone.

The conversation, which was described as routine, came after a tense week between Paris and Berlin as France’s new socialist government tries to find common ground with Merkel, a centre-right, pro-austerity champion.

On Thursday, Merkel irritated some partners by calling proposed solutions to the crisis quick fixes smacking of “mediocrity” that failed to address core problems.

French Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault responded by urging Merkel to avoid “simplistic talk”.

Ayrault seemed to smooth things over Friday, saying Berlin and Paris should work “hand-in-hand for a solution to pull Europe out of crisis”, and called for stronger contacts with Berlin.

“Without growth, even if you move to reduce debt, you won’t be all right,” Ayrault said.

A strong Franco-German partnership has been considered key to progress and problem-solving in the 17-nation eurozone, and the wider European Union, in the past.

Earlier today, Merkel warned that it was crucial for the eurozone that Greece elects a government which would stick to all terms of the €130 billion bailout. Joint frontrunners, the left party Syriza have promised to rip up the austerity agreement if it gains a majority.

    • @Tony Skill, agreed , its seems to be all about what France and Germany want, nobody else seems to have any input into this,
The origional concept of the European Union was all about its population being as one , one big happy family , now however it is nothing more than a financial dictatorship with no other purpose but to make as much money as possible for the financial institutions by taxing the ordinary man in the street into poverty.
but let us not forget George Orwells “Animal Farm”
“All men are equal ” became “all men are equal , except some who are more equal than others”

then remember how the story ended.

    • Agree Richard..that was the original intention of the union…but like most noble aspirations, it’s been hijacked by political ambitions, greed and vested interests. It’s nothing more than an old boys club on a grand scale.

  • @Tony Skill, it must be some of these “old boys club”members who are red thumbing us , nothing else to do I suppose.

    • I red thumbed you because your understanding of the current issues suggests such a gross ignorance that most critical readers would rather just move on after delivering their expressions of distaste rather than use up energy to tackle your deficits.
There has been a complete conspiracy within a broad remit of Irish society to create the myth of wealth for anyone and everyone over a protracted and unparalleled period of time.In many respects it was exemplified by the bogus non resident bank accounts that we would prefer to forget when hundreds of thousands of ordinary Irish people set about cheating Society in grandiose illegal schemes supported by friendly Bankers! Remember?
Unfortunately the so called wealth of more recent times to which we refer as the Celtic Tiger was fools gold and our Democratic Institutions converted our ensuing Banking debts into Sovereign ones. Everyone but nobody was to blame and I personally struggled to counsel people from joining in and mostly failed.
When the bubble burst which is merely an expression of physics ( what goes up will come down ) and our economy started to slide the markets wouldn’t lend us money to manage our day to day affairs without charging us prices we couldn’t afford.
Then our European friends came to our rescue together with the IMF and somehow the conservative and decent German people who saw our Labour costs and the salary levels of our Politicians our doctors and our Nurses ( God Bless them!) and our Public Servants and so on and shuddered at the greed and the stupidity they gave their marching orders to their Public Representatives. I recall the German Ambassador being interviewed by Marion Finucane on her Radio Programme and he openly described his annual seventy thousand Euro as quite high . He behaved impeccably as a member of the Diplomatic Corps by not tackling the lady over her obscene income from a State owned Broadcaster.
The Greeks have lied about their public finance for years and tax avoidance and evasion is a national pastime enjoyed by everyone at all levels in society. Most multinationals trading in Greece with the Government haven’t been paid in years!
Today for those still in employment in Ireland the rates of personal taxation continue to be among the lowest in the EU and most of the above mentioned comparative salaries within the broader sectors of State sponsored jobs are still substantially above average EU levels.
The Greeks want to walk away from their responsibilities and it seems as if you do too.
When the walls come tumbling down you will find some way to adjust your thinking and absolve yourself from any guilt but I’ll remember you and your ilk!
That Sir is why I red thumbed you!

Its in German interests to make sure these European economies are working. They helped feed the boom. Why? More cash meant people would go out and buy BMWs, Miele kitchen appliances Etc Etc Etc. That helped build German wealth. Very clever if you ask me
