Android gains on Apple in surging tablet sector: survey

The global appetite for tablet computers is growing faster than previously thought – and Android-powered devices are gaining on iPads – a new survey claims.

THE GLOBAL MARKET for tablet computers is growing faster than earlier estimates suggested, with Android-powered devices gaining on the market-leading iPads, a survey said Wednesday.

IDC said it boosted its forecast for global tablet sales for 2012 to 122.3 million, from 117.1 million, in large part due to demand for Android tablets and the new iPad mini.

IDC also raised its 2013 forecast number to 172.4 million, up from 165.9 million and said shipments by 2016 worldwide shipments should reach 282.7 million.

“Tablets continue to captivate consumers, and as the market shifts toward smaller, more mobile screen sizes and lower price points, we expect demand to accelerate in the fourth quarter and beyond,” said Tom Mainelli, research director for tablets at IDC.

“Android tablets are gaining traction in the market thanks to solid products from Google, Amazon, Samsung, and others. And Apple’s November iPad mini launch, along with its surprise refresh of the full-sized iPad, positions the company well for a strong holiday season.”

IDC now expects Android’s worldwide tablet share to increase to 42.7 percent for 2012 from 39.8 percent in 2011. Apple’s share is expected to slip to 53.8 percent from 56.3 percent in 2011.

“The breadth and depth of Android has taken full effect on the tablet market as it has for the smartphone space,” said Ryan Reith, an IDC analyst.

“Android tablet shipments will certainly act as the catalyst for growth in the low-cost segment in emerging markets given the platform’s low barrier to entry on manufacturing. At the same time, top-tier companies like Samsung, Lenovo, and ASUS are all launching Android tablets with comparable to premium products, but offered at much lower price points.”

IDC predicts Windows-based tablets, including new devices from Microsoft and others, will gain share from both iOS and Android, growing from one percent of the market in 2011 to 2.9 percent in 2012 and 10.2 percent in 2016.

  • Can anyone please explain to me why would someone would buy an iPad (€450) instead on an Android Tablet (€200)

    • To look cool?

But to be fair both operating systems have positives and negatives and suit different people in different ways.

I wanna get a tablet for my mother. U reckon a cheaper one like android does the job? Like Skype and camera and wifi?

    • I am always hating on apple and I’ve owned two Android Tablets and four android phones but many of the €200 Android Tablets are not really in the same league as the Ipad spec for spec, except perhaps the Nexus 7 if you like a smaller tablet.

    • @ Oh Boy, the 16GB Google Nexus 7 will do all that and it costs around €199

    • @Oh Boy. The android tablets can do everything the iPad can do. If you mother is only interested in Skype, browsing the net, playing a few games and watching Movies or videos online than android is superior to the iPad. I have a Asus transformer which has a detachable keyboard as well so if she is going to be writing emails or anything it’s the job because touch screens aren’t great for that. But it’s expensive. The nexus is a great tablet for the price.

    • Really? Can I plugs electric guitar into the nexus and have customized amps play it back to me?
Can I run Fifa 13 ultimate web app only my S3? in other words most android fans talk complete shite and haven’t what they’re talking about. The big advantage the iPad has over the nexus etc is not hardware but its iOS ecosystem and security. No enterprise would allow android devices free reign on their networks. On phones I agree , both devices are equally as good.

    • Which 10″ androids device with 16gb are you comparing the ipad to? A lot of the android devices have lower specs at that price, Samsung galaxy’s etc are closer in price and spec.
The good and also bad think about iPads is they are locked down and have exactly the same hardware for each model. Androids being an open system means no two tablets are the same. I have an ipad and an iPhone. Therefore if I buy an app it will run on both (at no extra cost). If you have an android phone then an android table would probably make more sense. I am equally delighted and aggravated by my apple devices but they are very reliable, with some great features and I am invested in them through my app purchases therefore no new android model or Microsoft tablet would tempt me I think.

  • I think next year will mark the beginning of the end of Apple’s dominance in the tablet market, due to some really poor decisions taken this year including releasing two practically indistinguishable versions of the iPad within 6 months of one another to muddle up their product mix, another new proprietary connector, a poorly received and generally lacklustre new edition of iOS6, brand new iPhone 5s emerging scratched from their boxes, and the forced obsolescence of the original iPad. Commentators and tech blogs are remarking on a change in Apple’s approach to rely less on outright innovation, and more on incremental improvements and re-workings of existing products.

The fact that Android has so much momentum now with the likes of the Galaxy S3 and the Nexus products gives consumers something to contrast the iPhone against which they didn’t have before, and their increasing tech-savvy and expectations lead them to arrive at the conclusion that Apple stuff is overpriced, and increasingly lagging behind the competition.

I’ve had the Google Nexus 7 for a few weeks now and I think it’s excellent. I also moved from iPhone to Samsung Galaxy S3 during the summer and its such a superior phone compared to iPhone…. The Nexus 10 tablet looks really nice….

    • Yeah depends what you prefer I still think that Apple ecosystem is better than Android and even old iPad 2 runs still smoother than quad core android tablet in overall experience. iOS is just better suited to the device as Android needs to run on myriad of devices, different makes and brands, while apple has just own 2 or 3 devices, simple. I am using android phone myself now, but can’t say bad word about iphone in fairness still think it’s probably best weighted all rounder.

Apples new business idea is just to sue everyone that makes smartphones and tablets. The are opening a new case against Samsung, they want to ban the S3, galaxy 10.1 and the galaxy note 2. Apple want to try ban Samsung from the US markets and charge all other companies like HTC etc for using there designs. The US will always stand by there own that’s why apple is still a company, other than that they would have been the next Nokia by now.

  • These stats are rediculous. We tried to get a business off the ground these specialising in low cost tablets; however, the reality is that many androids are totally unreliable with even the mid spec ones being light years behind apple.stats from Black Friday showed that 88% of tablet sales were apple so those market share stats are toilet paper

    • Spot on Graham, this article isn’t based on reality. Androids are cheaper but the are unreliable and the user experience is poor. Sure, Apple iPads are more expensive but you get a better experience, design and ecosystem.

  • Whoever compares 200 quid android Tablet vs 450 or 500 quid iPad clearly has no clue. In fairness Nexus 7 made a breakthrough as it cost 200 and can compete with iPad, but bear in mind this is 7 inch. Nexus 10 which is more appropriate direct competition to iPad cost like 400 or 450. So no that much of a difference in price in fairness. And when it comes to quality of apps ipad still leads the way, however now they feel android breath at their backs.

    • That would be me fizi, The reason I asked the question was because I sell tablets. If you look at the answers to my question you will notice that anyone that uses an iPad does so because its what they need and a tablet wont fit their requirements. Where’s the normal (majority) everyday user of an ipad or tablet is using it for the same thing. Surfing the net, checking emails, playing an odd game. It was a question to cure my own curiosity. Its safe to say that anyone who is just a normal sufer and buys an iPad has more or less wasted €200

  • Well, since there was an iPad and , well, nothing – it really can go only one way, can it not?

    • MS got to do tablets first but it failed as it marketed to professional and businesses only. There was also the Palm and Archos tablets. The software was not as good though.

    • I can see apple going out with a big bang,Android is by far a better all round, cost of apps being higher with apple, the cost of product its self, limited to connecting to just a i/pad/phone etc..
really its just a brand name

    • I believe what Daniel was trying yo convey is that initially there was no rival to the ipad & now with great competition it’s obvious they’ll lose market share.
To add to this, I have an ipad and android platform and Im seriously considering using my ipad as a chopping board from one on. Android far superior and once a similar facetime type app is widely used then superior in everyway. Skype users should take no insult.

    • I have an iPhone. I did have an android with larger screen. I never used the droid for music and found some of the apps not as good. However since then I see the newer droid phones are improving at a much faster rate. I still however do not see the secondary market producing docking stations for droid phones in any quantity and this alone gives apple the edge in the phone market.

The tablet market does not have the same limitations and cannot see myself using a tablet for music. The removable SD card slot is very usefull I think for storing movies. Something I think apple need to think about.
