Running on Google’s Android system, the price could be a big pull for those in the market for tablet computers.

AMAZON HAS UNVEILED a full colour tablet which it is hoping can challenge the dominance of Apple’s iPad.

The much anticipated device is known as the Kindle Fire and was unveiled by company founder and CEO Jeff Bezos in New York today.

BBC News reports that the company is hoping it can build on the loyalty of users of the popular Kindle e-book reader which until now has only been available in black and white and is designed primarily for reading books and magazines.

This latest device includes a seven inch screen display, with 1024 x 600 resolution and weighs about 413 grammes. It has a dual core processor with 8 gigabytes of internal storage.

It runs on a customised Google Android operating system. But the big pull might be that it retails for as low as $199 which is under €150.

The company has also launched a new Kindle model with a touch screen which is very close to the design of US book retailer Barnes & Noble’s Nook e-reader.

The Kindle Touch has a black-and-white “electronic ink” screen, just like current Kindle models, but will cost just $99 (€73).

However, its the Kindle Fire which will be the main talking point of today’s launch.

Here’s a demonstration of how the device works:

  • The Kindle was a brilliant piece of equipment and has been well supported by Amazon.

I wonder how long it will take to appear in Europe as it took till the 3rd generation of Kindle before Amazon.co.uk started retailing.

Amazon have the money and the customer base to give Apple a run for their money.

Me too, and I wouldn’t for a second consider buying an iPad.
Interesting. Wonder if it has opened a new market, because it’s definitely not trying to be an iPad.

    bye bye Apple

  • No camera and no microphone. Limits it a bit, but should be handy as a book reader and Internet tablet

  • It’ll never replace my iPad but they’ve done a great job. It’s the closest thing to an iPad competitor that has come along and the price is great.

  • Hmmm 8GB of internal storage. Maybe they mean iPod killer?
Plus without a 3G option all that great cloud content becomes almost irrelevant as soon as you leave the house.

  • God I don’t know how many iPhone killers and iPad killers I’ve read about over the last couple of years, no of which have succeeded.

  • A couple of things.

The first version of this is a basic model. The next version of it – rumored to be announced after Christmas – will have updated and more features.
Like Apple who with each their versions, later added more, as will Amazon. That part alone is not rocket science to understand and already Version 2 will be on the scene shortly (and STILL far cheaper than the overpriced Ipad).

Also I think it will be a rival to the Ipad but I’n not the only one read here for example: http://lnw.me/ArIMHm
The reason are too lengthy in detail to go into here but short version: Amazon is well placed in price, product, place (be it show or net) and promotion besides already connectivity to millions around the world via their already customer Amazon database.
Every tech review I have read gives this first one an “ok” – its not world class but does the job. The next version like rivals, will be even better – and again, still much cheaper than the Ipad.

It seems there is people just out there (some same people who forked out a fortune for their Ipad) who are just coming across as bitter that their precious Ipad will within a year of release two of Kindle Fire, will be left with still a good table in itself but with holding onto a far more expensive one, in purchase price and with items that can be bought for it.

The Kindle Fire, be it version 1 or 2, will finally introduce the use of tablet use to more people and via the much cheaper price, will make them more common place.

Credit goes to Apple for their introduction to the world – but the world has moved on and what Amazon is producing now/later with cheaper prices and a lot more media services (that have already signed up to work with Amazon to bring cheaper items too than with Apples 30% cut demanded + higher prices) will ensure that for once, along comes a product that will REALLY see the heads of Apple worried. Its already rumored, they are already!

Amazon is taking on Apple and by all accounts of market and strategy analysts, the tide is NOW starting to turn away from Apple.

  • The only people who are saying its an iPad killer are mainly the media who know no better (no offense). Its aimed at different market, which the nook color proved existed. With Amazon’s reach and heavy subsidy it has great chance of success. Now hopefully they will open the amazon app store in Ireland otherwise people will be waiting quite some time.till its rooted to get.access to google app market.

    • When HP’s WebOS tablet was cut down to a similar price people queued up to buy it. They’re going after a niche that has been, as of yet, left mostly untapped. Think this might actually be successful.

If anyone can do it Amazon can. The original kindle was a massive success, and this new model looks very slick. It’s a much more practical size and price. They seem to have focused a lot more on the cloud than Apple and it will be an obvious choice for Android smart phone users who want to keep using their Google accounts.
