There were 1,613 flights in Irish airspace on last month's busiest day

Air traffic figures for April show an increase at all three airports with Shannon seeing a significant rise of over 30 per cent.

COMMERCIAL AIR TRAFFIC at Irish airports rose 10 per cent last month compared to last year with Shannon experiencing a significant increase of 31.7 per cent while Dublin saw growth of 9.7 per cent.

Cork airport also saw a slight bump in its traffic of 1.1 per cent compared to April last year.

Total flights in Irish airspace in April 2014 increased by 3.1 per cent with an average of 1,488 daily flights. The busiest day was 25 April with 1,613 flights in Irish airspace.

The Irish Aviation Authoroty said this morning that the growth at Shannon is partly attributable to a number of new routes operating at the airport, including new services to Munich, Paris, Faro, Warsaw, Krakow, Nice, Poitiers, Berlin, Fuerteventura and Bristol. The airport also saw the first full month for the year-round six times weekly JFK New York service, which started at the end of March.

Chief Executive Eamonn Brennan said the figures are a clear sign that the domestic aviation industry is “firmly in recovery”.

On a cumulative basis, commercial air traffic for the first for months of this year is up by 6.1 per cent.
