LIMERICK-BASED COMPANY E-net is creating 50 new jobs as it announces an investment of €25 million in a high quality, next generation broadband network for Ireland.
Silicon Republic reports that the firm, which manages the State’s metropolitan area network (MAN) programme, provides fibre-optic infrastructure to broadband service providers like UPC, Vodafone and BT. CEO of E-net Conal Henry says providing a high quality fibre-powered network, accessible to businesses in all regions of Ireland “could generate a one per cent increase in GDP which is the equivalent of thousand of jobs and hundreds of millions in new taxes for the Exchequer”.
Twenty new jobs are being created directly by the company, and a further 30 in construction, as the investment will involve a significant amount of civil engineering works, reports the Irish Times.
Earlier this month the minister for communications Pat Rabbitte announced plans to extend broadband access to cover the whole country by the end of 2012. Rabbitte also announced a scheme to deliver next generation broadband to all areas of the country in line with EU targets.
