5 apps worth downloading this week

Featuring a messaging app that sends to random people, a handy sleep app, and a redesigned productivity app.

EACH WEEK, WE highlight five apps that are worth downloading for your smartphone and tablet. There are a lot of apps released on a daily basis, but not all of them are worth paying attention to.

This week includes a messaging app that sends to random people, a handy sleep app, and a redesigned productivity app.

Over
For: iOS, Android
Cost: €1.79 (iOS), €0.79 (Android)

- Over is all about adding more to your photos, not by throwing a filter onto it, but through clever design options and font choices.
- Alongside adding various artwork to your image, there are the usual photo editing features (crop, rotate, fade, etc.) to improve it.
- It’s quite varied, which is good considering you have to pay for it, but you will have more than enough tools to work with even with the inclusion of extra art and fonts for purchasing.
- Practically the entire app can be used with just your thumb, showing how intuitive it is.
- If you’re a heavy Instagram user, this is just the app to help give your snaps some extra life.

Pillow
For: iOS
Cost: Free (Premium costs €4.49)

- We could always do with improving our sleep patterns. Some sleep apps have made a decent stab at it, but few actually manage to improve your sleep quality.
- Pillow is actually rather helpful in determining your sleep pattern. It’s quite accurate in determining what you’re doing and analysing it.
- Should you want to try napping, or need advice on how to improve your sleep pattern, it covers that too. The latter is under the premium version, mind.
- The premium version allows you access to extra features including audio recordings, which picks up any moments like sleep talking or apnea. You can turn it off if you want though.
- An incredibly accurate sleep monitor that will honestly help improve your sleep routine.

Wunderlist
For: iOS, Android, Windows Phone
Cost: Free (Pro version available

- There’s a caveat with this inclusion. The version we’re covering for Windows Phone is only available for 8.1 users, which is currently being rolled out (FYI, it’s definitely worth upgrading to the latest update through ‘Preview for Developers’ mode if you haven’t already).
- Anyway, for those unaware of Wunderlist, it’s one of the best cloud-based task management apps out there. This version, Wunderlist 3, is currently in public beta, but still worth using.
- It automatically syncs with the desktop app (Windows and Mac) and the redesign here is smoother and easier to manage. There are some bugs here and there, but that’s to be expected with any beta releases.
- The major update are public lists (to share with friends), and real-time syncing, which is always handy.
- A genuine improvement to what is already a great service.

Fling
For: iOS
Cost: Free

-Snapchat has a lot to answer for. Ever since it came onto the scene, practically every instant messaging app has a self-destruct feature, or focuses on picture or video messaging.
- Fling is another pretender to the crown, and it does a good job from separating itself from the many clones out there.
- The big appeal is that you’re sending your message to random people, you can share it to as many as 50 people (minimum five) if you want.
- To its credit, some of the messages you get are quite nice, and can be entertaining, although the random sending makes it a little hit and miss.
- If you want a change in pace or are getting tired of traditional instant messaging apps, give this a whirl.

MemoLocation
For: Windows Phone
Cost: Free (€0.99)

- Reminders apps tend to be mostly time sensitive. Either you get them at a specific point or they’re spread out the entire day which isn’t much use if you can’t rigidly stick to a schedule.
- MemoLocation is simple to use. Find the place where you want to be reminded, hold down on the spot for a second or two and voila.
- You can still view your reminders on a main page, should you need to remind yourself everything you need to complete.
- The only thing you need to keep in mind is if you want to change locations, you have to delete a point and re-enter it instead of moving it around. It’s not as big a deal as it sounds since the set-up is so straightforward.
- A simple and easy to use reminder app that’s bound to come in useful.
