5 apps worth downloading this week

Scanning documents, hide and seek and slicing sheep.

EACH WEEK, WE highlight five apps that are worth downloading for your smartphone and tablet. There are a lot of apps released on a daily basis, but not all of them are worth paying attention to.

This week features scanning documents, hide and seek and slicing sheep.

Scanner 6 Pro
For: iOS
Cost: €2.99

- Keeping track of your important documents is always important, and if you can get them digitalised and saved on your computer, even better.
- That’s what Scanner 6 Pro does, using your iPhone/iPad’s camera to scan documents and save them for future reference.
- Obviously, the better a camera you have, the better the images will be but overall, it’s great at capturing documents.
-  There’s also one-click sharing to services like Dropbox, OneNote, and Google Drive to name a few.
- It has a 50% discount at the moment (it’s usually €5.99) so now’s a good a time as any to get it.

InstaNote
For: Windows Phone
Cost: Free

- InstaNote is designed for those regularly in business meetings, and like a quick reference to specific sections.
- It records the audio for any situation you’re in, but instead of recording everything, it captures the last 15 – 60 seconds of what was said once.
- There’s also a auto-transcribe function, although you need to make sure the speech is clear for it to work properly (it can be hit and miss at times)
- You can sign in or use it anonymously, it’s up to you, and there are auto-sharing features with email and OneNote for easy transfer.
- Handy for meetings, but it’s useful for a number of other situations.

Öi – Hide and Seek
For: iOS
Cost: Free

- A hide and seek game with your phone may conjure images of you misplacing it and turning the house upside down while you look for it, but this won’t place you in such a situation.
- The premise is this: Hide your phone somewhere, and your friends or family must try to find it by listening out for audio cues.
- The game has six different characters with their own voice and personality and three difficulty levels in case things get a little easy.
- If you had to simplify it, this game is much like a mix between hide and seek and Marco Polo which isn’t a bad thing by any means.
- A game that will keep the kids occupied for short bursts (or if they get tired of traditional Hide and Seek).

Inputting+
For: Android
Cost: Free (Pro version costs €1)

- Inputting+ wants to solve the problem all touchscreen keyboards have which is the lack of undo, redo or find and replace buttons for your phone.
- The app allows you to do this with a single tap, appearing as a floating bubble (think FB Chatheads) anytime you bring your keyboard up.
- The drawback is for now, it doesn’t work for certain apps that rely on the web like Chrome or Google Docs.
- The pro version offers extra functionality like Timeline which collects all text typed out in other apps and presents them in a timeline.
- It’s in beta so expect some bugs, but it’s useful for when you’re writing longer messages.

Divide by Sheep
For: iOS (Android version arriving soon)
Cost: €2.99

- A puzzle game that’s based around about maths?  Don’t worry, it’s not as bad as it may sound and it’s really adding and subtracting at best.
- Divide by Sheep has you guiding sheep across a flooded landscape and making sure the right number of sheep arrive at each raft.
- The challenge is platforms only hold a certain number of sheep at any one time. Also wolves and other obstacles will appear as you try to complete each level.
- The presentation is bright and cheerful and there’s a good/weird sense of humour behind it. Flinging them at laser cuts them in half but they’re taped back together when they reach the raft.
- A solid puzzler that offers a challenge to both young and old.
