5 apps worth downloading this week

Featuring a wonderful weather app, one of the best Twitter clients for Windows Phone and a frustrating zigzag game.

EACH WEEK, WE highlight five apps that are worth downloading for your smartphone and tablet. There are a lot of apps released on a daily basis, but not all of them are worth paying attention to.

This week features a wonderful weather app, one of the best Twitter clients for Windows Phone and a frustrating zigzag game.

Fresh Air
For: iOS
Cost: €2.99

- It’s always nice to come across a familiar concept presented differently, and for all intents and purposes, Fresh Air gives a different view of the weather.
- Breaking it down into seven-day segments, the design is lovely and you can break down the weather into a minute-by-minute segments thanks to the graph-like interface
- It syncs with your calendar so if you’re travelling or flying abroad, you can check to see what weather to expect when you arrive there.
- On top of that, there are notifications alerting you to any changes and severe weather warnings as well.
- A great assistant app that feels like it’s more than a weather app.

Aeries
For: Windows Phone
Cost: €4.49

- The official Twitter app for Windows Phone is a bit meh if we’re honest. Compared to the iOS and Android versions, it feels somewhat lacking in a number of areas.
- Aeries offers a more intuitive version of Twitter (which isn’t hard in this case) but includes many more features you wouldn’t find there.
- All the features you enjoy are there alongside some nice little touches like saving the position you were on your timeline, offline support and a powerful filter system
- Granted there isn’t a trial period, but chances are you will know already if this is the app for you or not.
- If you’re a serious Twitter user, you will absolutely love this.

Tworlds
For: iOS
Cost: Free

- Social media is, by its very nature, polished and exact. There’s very little scope for finding the real moments even when you’re dealing with apps like Snapchat.
- Tworlds hopes to change that by allowing you to see what someone else is doing at that very moment (Not literally mind, through the photos they take).
- Simply choose a topic or ‘moment’, take a photo reflecting it and see it combined with another corresponding photo.
- It doesn’t allow you to access your camera roll, meaning that all shots must be unedited and in the moment. It’s also anonymous (the only location shown is the city you’re in) so you won’t have to worry about being seen or discovered.
- Should you be looking for a different social app or want to experiment with something different, it’s a nice way to kill time.

SoundHUD
For: Android
Cost: Free (€1.49 after 15-days)

- SoundHUD mightn’t seem like an essential download, it really just customises your volume panel, but there are some handy features included.
- Probably its most important feature is the introduction of a silent mode for Lollipop users. Which is very handy if you’re using it.
- Apart from that, you can choose the style of panel you use (expanded, status bar or thin line) and customise the length of time it stays up.
- There’s also a volume stream lock, allowing you to adjust the music volume instead of a ring tone, and long press actions
- If you’re a heavy multimedia user, this is a handy app to have.

ZigZag
For: iOS, Android
Cost: Free

- Flappy Bird has a lot to answer for. Not content with just having a one-tap game, now we have an abundance of games that follow the frustrating but fun formula.
- ZigZag is one such example. The premise is like a cross between Marble Madness and Flappy Bird.
- Guiding your ball across an isometric landscape, you tap to change direction (90 degrees to be exact) and ensure it doesn’t fall off.
- Yet like the best games, you’re always in control and if you fall off, you can only blame the person holding the phone.
- This and Crossy Road are going to take up a lot of your time.
