5 apps worth downloading this week

Featuring hunting for eBay bargains, turning habit building into a game and the return of a 2013 classic.

EACH WEEK, WE highlight five apps that are worth downloading for your smartphone and tablet. There are a lot of apps released on a daily basis, but not all of them are worth paying attention to.

This week features hunting for eBay bargains, turning habit building into a game and the return of a 2013 classic.

Snipe for eBay
For: iOS
Cost: Free

-  Tinder has a lot to answer for. Ever since its started reducing things to a swipe, many other apps have copied the format for their own apps.

- Snipe requires you to have an eBay account and it works the same way as Tinder. Swipe left to dismiss an item or right to bid on it. It even calls itself the ‘Tinder for eBay’.

- The items you’re swiping on are auctions you’re interested in, allowing you to make a last minute bid before they’re sold.

- You can skip them if you want, but there’s always the possibility that it will be sniped by someone else using the app.

- For those eBay addicts who are on the lookout for a bargain before or after Christmas.

Habitica
For: iOS, Android
Cost: Free

- Building up good habits is a difficult process. Motivation is hard enough to begin with but keeping track on your achievements, and remembering how far you’ve come is even harder.

- Habitica comes from the same people behind HabitRPG which turns daily tasks into a roleplaying game.

- You set tasks for yourself but instead of just ticking off each one, you gain experience for doing so.

- Your custom avatar represents your achievements by fighting monsters, completing quests, and  looting equipment. Everything you do in the real world translate into the game.

- If you enjoy games in any form, this could be the app you need to help you stick to your goals.

Reelgood
For: iOS
Cost: Free

- One of the hardest thing to do when you’re on Netflix is deciding what to watch. You probably spend more time looking through the list of movies instead of watching them.

-  Reelgood tries to help you decide what to watch, by pooling together recommendations from your friends and (failing that) popular opinion

- You can filter by genre, popularity or Rotton Tomatoes score and most importantly, streaming service like Netflix.

- The drawback is this heavily relies on friends being on the platform. There are recommendations, but they’re from Rotten Tomatoes (plus the cinema listing section doesn’t work here yet).

- For those who have serious problems deciding what to watch.

PicsArt
For: iOS, AndroidWindows Phone
Cost: Free

- There are quite a number of photo editors out there for Windows Phone, but few of them are universal apps.

- While it’s available on iOS and Android, PicsArt just updated to work on both Windows 10 and Windows Phone, giving you a consistent experience across Windows devices.

- And it works well. It doubles up both as a photo editor and a social network for photographers, with themed contests appearing regularly.

- The app itself is pretty good. There are a lot of different effects and actions you can take to improve your photos such as cloning, blur, layer editing and brush filters. What we’re trying to say here is you have a lot to work with.

- For those who want a comprehensive photo editor.

Badland 2
For: iOS
Cost: €4.99

- For those of you who remember it, the original Badland was one of the best iOS and Android games released in 2013. So it’s no surprise that a sequel appeared.

- The sequel is easily one of the most beautiful games to appear on iOS this year and builds on the original in a number of ways.

- Not a whole lot has changed from the original, but you have a greater degree of control over your black blob, moving left and right. The other additions flesh out the experience, and give it a lot of substance.

- The controls are tight and so too is the level design. You’ll zoom through each level and while they become more complex, it’s rare that you don’t know what you’re doing.

- What are you waiting for, go play it already.
