40 new jobs as pharmaceutical giant acquires vialling plant in Athlone

In a move supported by the IDA, Alexion Pharma Ireland Trading is set to purchase the Roscommon facility later this year.

DOZENS OF NEW jobs have been announced this morning in Roscommon as a pharmaceutical giant looks to expand its operations in Ireland.

Alexion Pharma Ireland, a subsidiary of Alexion Pharmaceuticals, is due to purchase a vialling facility in Athlone, creating 40 new jobs.

The acquisition is supported by the IDA and is due to be finalised later this year, after which the company will “fit and improve the facility”.

Executive Vice President at Alexion Pharmaceutical Stephen Squinto said that the company is committed to growing its “global supply chain operation in Ireland”.

“Life-transforming medicines”

“As we continue to grow and expand our operations to serve more patients, this facility will help us to provide life-transforming medicines to patients in Europe and around the world.”

IDA CEO Barry O’Leary said the move will “strengthen the life sciences cluster in the Midlands region”.

Alexion currently employs almost 1,800 employees, and its operations serve patients in nearly 50 countries.
