40 new jobs as pharmaceutical giant acquires vialling plant in Athlone

In a move supported by the IDA, Alexion Pharma Ireland Trading is set to purchase the Roscommon facility later this year.

DOZENS OF NEW jobs have been announced this morning in Roscommon as a pharmaceutical giant looks to expand its operations in Ireland.

Alexion Pharma Ireland, a subsidiary of Alexion Pharmaceuticals, is due to purchase a vialling facility in Athlone, creating 40 new jobs.

The acquisition is supported by the IDA and is due to be finalised later this year, after which the company will “fit and improve the facility”.

Executive Vice President at Alexion Pharmaceutical Stephen Squinto said that the company is committed to growing its “global supply chain operation in Ireland”.

“Life-transforming medicines”

“As we continue to grow and expand our operations to serve more patients, this facility will help us to provide life-transforming medicines to patients in Europe and around the world.”

IDA CEO Barry O’Leary said the move will “strengthen the life sciences cluster in the Midlands region”.

Alexion currently employs almost 1,800 employees, and its operations serve patients in nearly 50 countries.

In fairness to them bodies like the IDA, Tourism Ireland etc are the best in the world at what they do.

Lot of what we do here is up there with the best in fact, the perennial fly in the ointment has always been that FG and FF have to get their oar in to reward their cronies and kick back specialists.

Industries where the corrupt FG/FF parties cannot distort thrive in fact. Toursim, Agri-food etc are global examples.

Irish companies that manage and run projects here do so on time and on budget. Here suppliers are picked on what FF cumann they are in or their friendship with a minister and allowed suppl sub-standard material at inflated costs.

Are these new jobs in Athlone or Roscommon? I know part of Athlone is in County Roscommon but the article is a little vague!

They”re in Athlone which stupidly is split between Roscommon and Westmeath with no joined up thinking between the battling county councils.

No Profits no new Drugs, it’s as simple as that, the drug companies discover the new drugs from their research not any Government.
So next time you get sick go to the doctor and then refuse any drugs that they might prescribe as you are against this profit making scam.

They are life changing drugs for the people that need them and profit making for the company, it costs millions and takes years for a company to get a safe effective drug to market, of course they will sell them for a profit.
