A FISH FEED plant in Westport Co Mayo has announced that it is to close down with the loss of 22 jobs.
Management at the Skretting Ireland plant held a meeting with staff this morning to inform them of the decision.
The company’s Managing Director Anthony Murphy said that the plant was being forced to close because continued production in the Westport facility had become uneconomic.
The company has also cited the significant fall in demand for salmon feed year on year in the Irish market as a reason for the closure of the farm.
Murphy said that the costs of running the Westport plant were double that of any of the company’s other facilities.The company trades in 17 different production plants across five continents.
Production will be moved to Invergordon in Scotland and Longridge in England.
Workers have been meeting with SIPTU today, and have expressed shock at the decision.
