Have a bit of spare time? You should change your WiFi password

It might seem trivial but changing the default password prevents freeloaders from using your WiFi without your knowledge.

SINCE YOU HAVE a bit of free time (fingers crossed) to catch up on a few things, it might be worth checking your WiFi connection and changing the password on it.

If you’ve opted for the one provided, that can put your connection at risk as anyone could come in and access it using the default code.

The process is straightforward so here’s how to change it for each provider.

eir
1) Type in 192.168.1.254 into your browser’s address bar (for third-party modems, it’s 192.168.1.1).
2) Enter in your username and password.
- If it’s a standard broadband service, it’s username: eircom@eircom.net and password: broadband1
- If it’s an eir Fibre connection, it’s username:admin and the password is the one on the back of your modem.
- Third-party modems have their own username and password. Check the manual for them.
3) Look for the Wireless LAN option and you should see an option to change your WiFi password.
4) Change your password.

Sky
1) Type in 192.168.0.1 into your browser’s address bar.
2) Enter in your username and password (default is ‘admin’ and password ‘sky’).
3) Go to useful settings  > Change Wireless Password.
4) Enter in the same username and password
5) Change your password and click Apply.

UPC/Virgin
1) Type in 192.168.1.1 into your browser’s address bar.
2) Type in your username and password (default is ‘admin’ and ‘password’).
3) Go into Setup/Wireless and look for (WPA) Pre-shared key.
4) Change your password.

Just out of interest, is anybody here with Sky? I’m thinking of changing over to them soon. Eir are FAR too expensive for what they provide. Sky are 20 euro cheaper than Eir for the same thing!

You will need a working landline to change to Sky. Eircom cancelled ours and now can’t change to Sky.

I left Eir because I was being overcharged every month, I rang every month and complained, next bill would be credited but would also be overcharged again, customer service is atrocious also it was too expensive, with Vodafone since September and happy with.

You still need a line, unless the internet is coming from the mobile masts? Vodafone use Eir’s infrastructure (same as everyone else ..sky etc) for the home broadband packages

Just to add I have switched the mother in law over from Eir to Vodafone recently too due to bad customer service. I personally have yet to have trouble with them after 36 months of service

I am with Sky, it’s €50 per month but it’s decent. I didn’t have a landline beforehand but I did have to get one. My brother was with Vodafone until recently but he had terrible problems with his.

I joined sky BB from Three and found the service 10 times better. Sky’s customer service is very good also. Needed an engineer a few times regarding problems on the line and it was sorted without hesitation. €49 a month for TV and Broadband so couldn’t go wrong :)

+1 for Vodafone, as previous sky customer I found Vodafone cheaper for the simply broadband option, in all the years with sky a landline was included I never even knew the number or plugged in a landline phone, I get consistent 60mb download 10mb upload static ip adress for €41 a month

We’re with Sky. We moved from Vodafone to Sky. We were fed up with slow speeds in the evening. Started well, became even worse than before, but now is good (for rural standards). Their customer service is pretty good though, in my experience anyway. I would never use Eir(com) again. Moved away several years ago. They just charge too much for the same as others provide.

Had same problem when vodafone cancelled my landline. SKY said nothing could be done. Then they rang me and said an Eircom engineer would be out in a week. A week later I was with SKY. They can do it.

Great name change eircom to “eir, air” that’s exactly what they are, and full of it. Useless. Rather have no landline or mobile if they were my choice.

One thing that the article doesn’t mention is that your PC needs to be connected to your modem with an ethernet cable to change your internet password.

If anyone had any sense, buy a decent router and get rid of the free one, they are normally the cheapest crap with locked down software so you don’t get the full settings menu

When you change the UPC wifi code, it will hold until they send an update to the box. It will then default back. Easy to change again but a pain in the ass as none of your wifi devices will connect to your network and you either need to reset your wireless device wifi code or connect using a cable.
