THE TECHNOLOGY SECTOR has created over 100 new jobs in two separate announcements today.
A semiconductor company is creating 75 positions in Limerick, while another 30 jobs are being created at a software development company in Dublin.
The Limerick jobs are being created by ON Semiconductor, which is to invest €13m in its design centre in the city.
Director John Blake said the company was seeking electronic engineers – and that the new round of recruitment may only be the start of his company’s latest recruitment drive.
While the semiconductor sector employs 8,000 people in Ireland at the moment, he told RTÉ News, it could create the capacity for another 2,000 jobs in the coming years.
Software developer Misys is creating 35 jobs by establishing a new research and development team in Dublin.
Misys offers software solutions for financial services, and already employs over 100 people in the capital.
Its chief technology officer Robin Crewe said the previous ventures in Ireland were created as a result of acquisitions, and that the new investment represented an important milestone for Misys’s status here.
Jobs minister Richard Bruton welcomed the announcement, saying it showed that Ireland was “making real progress”.
IDA Ireland’s Barry O’Leary said the presence of Misys enhanced Ireland’s position in winning what he called “knowledge-led investment”.
